Philips Wiz Connected Smart Light Bulbs

As a matter of fact, the Philips Wiz Connected smart light bulbs may well shake up the smart bulb industry. Before Wiz popped along, the colour-changing bulb market was dominated by industry leaders Philips Hue and Lifx - both of whom were charging premium prices - from £59.99 and £49.95 respectively.

Wiz delivers 16 million colours at more than half the price - £28.99 on Amazon

Plus they have several other note-worthy features and a reasonable selection of smart bulb styles.

Installing Wiz Smart Bulbs

When you download the Wiz app and sync it with your Wi-Fi network, you will be prompted to start the pairing process. A unique feature with Philips Wiz Connect is the bulbs you are pairing start flashing purple. Nice touch.

To set up the bulbs, select the room your in, wait for a bulb to pulsate, give it a name, and save.

From here, you can go into the setting by tapping on the little gear icon and change the colour, the glow, the warmth and select automatic cycles that regulate your circadian rhythm.

Creating your own scene settings is a popular option too.

Wiz bulbs are not compatible with Apple Homekit but you can still adjust them with Siri through your mobile device.

Wiz Smart Bulbs Lighting Settings

The Philip’s Wiz smart bulb has a default setting of 800 lumens - the equivalent of a 60-watt incandescent light. The biggest difference, however, is that smart bulbs about four times less energy.

Sync the Wiz app with your personal assistant and you can activate light settings by the sound of your voice. Just say: “(Siri (or equivalent), turn on the disco lights.”

Oh yeah, baby, now we’re talking.

There's also sensible light settings such as customising your sleep patterns.

Did you know that the blue light in HDTV’s, smartphones, laptops and tablets can disrupt your sleep pattern? True story.

I’m not sure whether Wiz’s Rhythm Mode will counterbalance blue light, but it won’t do any more damage.

Wiz Bulbs Features

  • Voice-activated
  • 16-million colours
  • Sync lights with TV and music
  • Group settings to create a lighting scene
  • Wellbeing options that regulate your circadian rhythm

Verdict

Affordable, hub-free, 16-million colours, voice-activated and helps you sleep. What’s not to like!

The Philips Wiz Connected Smart Bulbs may not be as bright as some other competing smart light bulbs but they do an admirable job. It’s safe to say that Philips Wiz smart bulbs are among the best we’ve reviewed for performance - and on top of that represent excellent value for money.
